                                                 Fences and Buildings

As I was driving downtown to start drifting for the project I had no idea what I wanted to take pictures of, so while I wandered down w first street for a couple of minutes I noticed all the different types of buildings and fences which had caught my eye immediately! They were all very unique and had a lot of style in so many different ways. There were also a few bridges that I really liked down by the river that were interesting to look at as well, but in the end I had decided that my final project was going to be on all the different fences and buildings for sure!

John Taylor 1867/ Howling Wolf  1875-1878
Treaty Singing at Medicine Creek Lodge

Which, in your opinion, is the more representational? Which is more abstract?
In my opinion the more representational is John Taylor's version, his is so much more realistic and you can clearly understand the image. The more abstract would definitely be Howling Wolf's version of the peace treaty. It kind of reminds me of a little kids drawing, its more difficult to understand.

Both works possess the same overt content- that is, the peace treaty singing- but how do they differ in form? Taylor's version and Wolf's version are both completely opposite from each other. Taylor's is more straight forward and gets right to the point and very easy to understand and Wolf's on the other hand gives you more ideas to think about the situation.

How, in comparison, are the Native Americans portrayed in Taylor's work? In what ways is Taylor's work ethnocentric? Taylor's work is very ethnocentric, in his drawings all of the Indians look very similar as well as the trees, bushes etc. Then when looking at Wolf's drawings his are very different and from colors, shapes and sizes.

What does this suggest to you about the role of women in the two societies?
In the Indian culture women are very lovable, and  caring and help out a lot and are highly looked upon for doing such a natural mothering job. In our culture mothers are left up to the normal household matters, such as doing the dishes, cooking, cleaning, etc. and on top of that being a mother.
